Résumé : |
It has a historical context with research of the time-
This book has a set of temporal, social and cultural circumstances that surround the events, and that may be relevant to better understand its content. There are many examples in which historical events have shaped the contents and forms of literature, as well as this has on many occasions been the best testimony of the importance of certain events throughout history. I come back from academic exile to tell you about Tess, an English classic by Thomas Hardy that has awakened many feelings and has also pissed me off a lot. Not in that order necessarily. Although, at first glance, Tess, that of the D'Urberville is another peasant-raped-by-aristocrat-and-later-drama topic, it is not so much if we think that this work was written over a hundred years ago by A MAN and that still, at this stage of human civilization, can be applied to current events. I may not share Tess's fate, neither you, nor your cousin, nor your neighbor in the room, but it is undeniable that, to this day, women's sexual freedom is not as assured or accepted as we think. And yes, if you have not read the novel or seen the BBC mini series, I confirm: Tess, the D'Urberville is a drama of the copon. |
